KIDNAPPED OYO PUPILS, TEACHERS REGAIN FREEDOM AFTER SECURITY OPERATION

ABUJA, NIGERIA – JULY 10, 2026 – The pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending about 56 days in captivity.

According to the Presidency, the victims were successfully rescued through coordinated efforts by Nigeria's security agencies. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development, describing the operation as a successful outcome of sustained security efforts to secure the release of the abductees. 

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed bandits attacked schools in the Oriire area, sparking widespread concern across the country and renewed calls for stronger protection of educational institutions. 

During the rescue operation, several suspects were reportedly arrested, while others were neutralised by security operatives. 

The successful rescue has been welcomed by families, residents, and well-wishers, with many expressing gratitude to the security agencies for securing the victims' safe return after weeks in captivity. 

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating kidnapping and improving security across the country, particularly around schools and vulnerable communities, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
