GOMEP-NG Raises Alarm Over Insecurity, Says Criminals Are Growing Stronger Than Government

Abuja - The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has expressed grave concern over the country's worsening security situation, warning that the continued inability to rescue abducted schoolchildren raises serious questions about the protection of lives and the effectiveness of the nation's security response.
The President of GOMEP-NG, Comr. Akpovoke Otiti reportedly lamented that Nigeria had reached a troubling point where criminals operating from forest hideouts appeared to wield greater power than the government, a situation he described as deeply concerning for a country entrusted with the responsibility of protecting its citizens.
The guild's concerns come amid persistent anxiety over the fate of schoolchildren reportedly abducted in Borno State, whose continued captivity has heightened fears among parents, communities and Nigerians at large.
GOMEP-NG also drew attention to the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State, that it was the same day, but Oyo school children have been released, noting that incidents of this nature have intensified public concern over the safety of pupils and the security of educational institutions across the country.
In a strongly worded condemnation, the guild described the situation as a serious national embarrassment, stressing that the protection of citizens, particularly vulnerable schoolchildren, must remain a foremost responsibility of Our government.
The organisation expressed particular concern that, while Nigerians remain anxious about the safe return of abducted pupils and the growing threat of banditry, considerable political attention is already being directed towards the 2027 general elections.
According to the guild, the apparent shift in national attention towards electoral calculations, at a time when families are desperately awaiting the return of their children, raises troubling questions about the country's priorities.
GOMEP-NG maintained that securing lives and property must take precedence over political ambitions, insisting that no electoral contest should overshadow the urgent need to protect communities from armed criminals and prevent further abductions.
The guild called for renewed commitment to intelligence led security operations, stronger protection for schools and vulnerable communities, and decisive action to ensure that abducted children are safely reunited with their families.
It further stressed that Nigerians deserve reassurance through tangible results rather than statements of concern, arguing that public confidence in government depends significantly on its ability to guarantee the safety of citizens.
As anxiety continues over the fate of the abducted pupils, GOMEP-NG urged the relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure their release and confront the wider security challenges threatening communities across the country.
For the guild, the issue extends beyond the fate of individual victims. It raises a fundamental question about the government's capacity to fulfil one of its most basic obligations: protecting the lives of the people it serves.
